I hope you all had a lovely February break and managed to get out and about, even in the snow. It has been good to see the pupils back online since Tuesday and we will look forward to seeing some of our senior phase pupils back at school, from 22 February, for learning and teaching of some practical subjects.  Some parents/carers and pupils may also wish to participate in our first ever School Bake-Off as a bit of fun during remote learning (please see details at the end of my HT’s update).

I wrote to parents/carers of S4-S6 pupils earlier on this week regarding the asymptomatic testing for senior phase pupils returning to school from 22 February. This testing does not apply to S1-S3 pupils.

I have also written out to all parents/carers of S4-S6 pupils regarding the phased return to school for those young people following practical subjects.  A very small number of pupils will be attending over the coming weeks to complete practical tasks for SQA subjects that cannot be done remotely.

I would like to welcome back Caroline Falconer, to her Depute Head Teacher position. Caroline was on secondment to the South East Improvement Collaborative as Quality Improvement Manager. She will link with Lynn Adam as the Garleton House Team.

SQA Update

Notification from SQA came on Tuesday evening that submission dates for provisional grades for SQA candidates has now been extended to Friday 25th June.  Further information can be found here.

S3-S6 Course Choices/Learner Pathway Reviews

A reminder that our coursing is due to start now and this will take place online e.g. pupils will submit their initial choices using a Google Form and the coursing interviews will be conducted using Google Meet, in the same way as the recent parent consultation evenings.

All pupils in S2-S5 received two emails before the February break (to their Edubuzz account). One with information to support them in making their choices and a second one with the Google Form they need to use to submit their choices (prior to their coursing interview).

This information is also available on the Course Choice area of our website:

  • S2 into S3 – coursing interviews to be held w/b 1 March 2021
  • S3 into S4 – coursing interviews to be held w/b 22 February 2021
  • S4 into S5 – coursing interviews to be held w/b 8 March 2021
  • S5 into S6 – coursing interviews to be held w/b 15 March 2021

The last question on the Google Form asks the pupil to confirm that their parent/carer is aware of the choices being submitted i.e. we will take this as equivalent to a parent/carer signature. Once the form has been submitted, the pupil will receive a copy of the Form as they have submitted it, so that they/ you have a copy.

Any questions relating to coursing should be directed to your young person’s Pupil Support Leader (Guidance Teacher) in the first instance (by David Russell, DHT)

Remote Learning Resources

Further resources have now come online as East Lothian has linked with West_OS.   All pupils can now access recorded video lessons on using their Glow login to support their learning and revision at home! (If they do not have their Glow Login details please ask them to email admin@knox.elcschool.org.uk to request these from our admin team). Pupils can find West_OS in the Glow App Library where they will be able to add the tile to their personal Glow Launchpad. There are lots of quality assured video lessons available for all our pupils across a range of subjects. Pupils will find this a great resource to support their learning and revision on Glow .

In School Learning – all pupils

Parents/carers who are key workers are able to make an application to East Lothian Council to request a space in the in-school provision. Priority will be given to those key workers in category 1 and category 2 where both parent/carers are key workers or where there is a single parent who is a key worker. Wherever possible, parents/carers should make use of informal young person care arrangements in line with the Scottish Government Guidance. As always, health and safety of our school community comes first. In order to ensure the risk of transmission remains low, there is a need to limit the number of pupils working in school with a focus on supporting those in the most need. When in school, all pupils will be working in defined ‘bubbles’ (including at break and lunchtimes), asked to ensure hand sanitising on entry/exit to the building, encouraged to wear face coverings (S4-S6 must wear these as do staff supporting this provision) and asked to maintain physical distancing at all times.

Positive Cases: Please continue to report any positive cases to covidinschools@eastlothian.gov.uk or telephone 01875 613921.

Please note: If your young person is attending school (or in-school provision) from 22 February onwards, please do not send them to school if they, or anyone in your household has tested positive or has Covid-19 symptoms.  Please self-isolate and book a test. If they are in S4-S6 and attending school for a practical subject(s) and they test positive using the lateral flow device testing kit, they should also self-isolate and book a PCR test.

Learning Estate Review

East Lothian Council’s vision is to develop a modern, safe, sustainable learning estate that enhances and supports communities while improving the lives of families equally no matter what area they are in. We’re now undertaking a pre-consultation activity which will help to inform a review of our Learning Estate.

An online survey has been created to gather views from the community. This feedback will help inform how we move forward with a full Learning Estate Review.

The pre-consultation public survey will be open from Monday 22 February until Monday 15 March, during which time the survey will be accessible on the East Lothian Council Consultation Hub.

More information and the online survey can be found at: eastlothianconsultations.co.uk/education/learning-estate-review-pre-consultation
