Intermediate 1/2
Pupils complete a Design Unit and an Expressive Unit over the year. Intermediate 2 pupils will sit a critical written exam at the end of the session. Pupils are encouraged to develop their own ideas and interests in their practical work, whilst exploring a range of media and techniques.
Example Expressive Unit
Pupils must put together three sheets for their Expressive Unit. An Investigation Sheet made up of drawings of individual objects they have chosen on a theme. A Development sheet where they explore different compositions and arrangements of their chosen objects. Over both sheets pupils are encouraged to use and experiment with different materials and techniques. The Final sheet is the finished piece of work which brings together their chosen composition and preferred choice of materials.
Example Design Unit

An Investigation Sheet made up of collected images on their theme, market research and existing examples, and a selection of their own drawings. A Development sheet where they explore at least two different designs for their piece, including experimentation with different materials. The Final sheet is the finished piece of work which could either be the actual piece if it is a flat piece of Graphic Design such as a poster or CD cover, or photographs of the finished 3D piece in the case of Fashion and Jewellery Design.
